Step 01 / 07  ·  the builder

I advise, lead, build and teach.

I'm John Kattenhorn, founder of Komputa. I help organisations do more with technology and AI, and I lead every engagement and do the work myself.

Step 02 / 07  ·  three things

Three things sit under everything I do.

  1. Curious I try it first

I love learning, and I try things before I recommend them.

  2. Builder since the mid-80s

I love building things. I have programmed since the mid-80s. It is still a Lego set that never runs out of parts.

  3. Helper building too

I love helping people. Sharing what I know, coaching and teaching are building too. I don't have to be the only one building.

Step 03 / 07  ·  both

A leader and a builder, in one person.

I set the direction and I do the work. The strategy and the code come from the same head, so nothing gets lost in a handover.

With Komputa, you get both.

Step 04 / 07  ·  the belief

Every organisation, however small, gets the full benefit of technology, AI included.

Large language models have brought AI into every organisation at once. Some people meet that with fear. I see the opposite: the biggest chance in my career to help organisations of every kind do more. With AI used well and governed properly, a small team can now build what used to take a large one.

Step 05 / 07  ·  what I do

Komputa helps organisations do more with technology and AI.

I don't sell a title. I can work as a CTO, a lead engineer, a reviewer or a coach, and most engagements need more than one of those. Every engagement mixes four modes.

  1. AI-made image: one near-black hexagonal part under a magnifying glass, the rest of the parts out of focus behind

    Advise

Reviews and judgement with a fixed scope: architecture, due diligence, AI readiness, proposal reviews.

    Fixed price
  2. AI-made image: a row of off-white hexagonal parts led by one near-black part at the front

    Lead

Running technology or AI for a while, fractional or interim, up to CTO level.

    Day rate, minimum term
  3. AI-made image: tweezers lowering a near-black hexagonal part onto a half-built stack of off-white parts

    Build

Building it for you: me, working with governed AI agents.

    Fixed price
  4. AI-made image: one large near-black hexagonal part with three small off-white parts lined up beside it, turned the same way

    Teach

Coaching and workshops for whoever needs them.

    Built into every engagement

Most work mixes two or more of them.

Step 06 / 07  ·  how I work

Three rules I hold to.

Most of my work is technology work of any kind: an app, a platform, a review, a team to lead. AI is how I deliver it faster and at a fixed price.

Fixed price by default.
It is better for you and for me. If we can't agree a fixed price, the definition of done isn't clear yet, and we fix that first.
Something written to keep.
Every engagement ends with something you keep: a report, a working system, a playbook.
The work is yours.
The code, the documents and the decisions are yours, and I teach whoever needs it, so you never depend on me.

Step 07 / 07  ·  say hello

Start a conversation.

I'd like to hear what you're working on: something you want to build, a problem you want solved, or an AI idea you want to test. Tell me where you are and where you want to get to.

One email is enough, and I reply myself.
